2005 Television Log
w = the writer; s = story credit; d = director. For Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David has a story credit on all episodes, so only the director is listed.

001. (01 Jan) /Gilmore girls, 1.17: The Breakup, Part 2/
(2001, w: Amy Sherman-Palladino d: Nick Marck) ****

003. (06 Jan) The West Wing, 6.10: Faith-Based Initiative (2005, w: Bradley Whitford (!) d: Christopher Misiano) ***
[Brad's fast and frequently funny script is bogged down by blah, I-guess-we-should-discuss-this-thing-that-was-all-the-rage-in-November gay marriage stuff. Definitely some intriguing developments, though: Donna on the rise, Santos is in (which means Josh vs. Will), and the value of Leo amidst staff flux and the continuing deterioration of the POTUS's health. Plus, a killer sight gag: the 4' 10" Kristin Chenoweth startles Allison Janney and walks with her down the hall ("I can't believe we're part of the same species."). And finally: Cleo King's Marla is kicking some serious ass -- imagine if Marcie from Magnolia kind of got her act together, moved to D.C., and became a White House temp. I wish this show was on HBO so I could hear her call Toby a "motherfucker".]
004. (06 Jan) life as we know it, 1.9: A Little Problem (2005, w: Leila Gerstein d: Michael Engler) **1/2
[This grade is probably a bit generous, but such is the reward for launching two nice guest-star arcs: Natasha Melnick, formerly Freaks and Geeks' Cindy Sanders, plays Sabrina, Deb's (Kelly Osbourne) formerly-Cindy Sanders-ish-but-now-all-Hot-and-Artsy Cousin. Sabrina reveals her love for Alan Moore's V for Vendetta and tells a story about photographing the Yeah Yeah Yeah's outside of the Bowery Ballroom, so Jonathan (Chris Lowell) is obviously obsessed (bad news for the chubby, not-as-artsy Deb!). Also, the great Peter Dinklage makes his first appearance as Dr. Belber, the school's iPod-lovin' guidance counselor (this show's much tamer, better-credentialed version of Jeff Rosso, though I seriously doubt Belber ever saw Hendrix live, which will probably hinder his ability to give meaningful guidance.) Belber eventually gets Dino (Sean Faris) to admit to having problems (divorce-based tumult, erectile dysfunction, etc.) and if he's any good at his job, the solution will be a vinyl copy of the Grateful Dead's American Beauty. Coming soon: Busy Phillips guest stars in episode 1.11.]

016. (20 Jan) life as we know it, 1.11: You Must Be Trippin' (2005, w: Luvh Rakhe d: Paul Holahan) **
[Tempting to go another 1/2 star just for the presence of Busy Phillips, who rocks all-too-briefly as a music editor for Seattle Scene, giving Deb her first internship assignment: 1,000 words on Vegemite -- "the band, not the spread," clarifies Busy.]

[More Poehler magic -- she clearly owns the show, hence the title change. A tipsy Bush daughter in a refreshing COLD OPEN (no dull-ass press conference!), a frantic, hilarious Barbara Boxer tearing into Condi, another go-round with Kaetlin (now a budding music geek who delivers an impromptu "Hard to Handle"), and a grandmother who saves an otherwise weak sketch by simply saying "Awwwwww, NUTS!" a few times. HAIL AP.]

[A lot of junk, of course, but also: a nice, Arrested Development promotional monologue with Bateman explaining the appeal of ratings-monster competitor Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ("Who wouldn't want to watch a hot, shirtless guy make a skate ramp for a kid with no bones?") and Poehler (aka, Wife of Gob) worrying about her finances; Clarkson rocking "Since U Been Gone" and holding her own in two sketches, including a repellent Sanz-based sketch revolving around -- you guessed it -- flatulence!; above average WU; and fun gesticulation dyslexia antics from Parnell (heil!)]
048. (13 Feb) Arrested Development, 2.10: Ready, Aim, Marry Me (2005, w: some guy & Mitchell Hurwitz d: Paul Feig) ***1/2
[Mildly disappointing (after a fantastic start, it fizzles a bit as Martin Short's Uncle Jack is an inspired -- and leaky -- comic creation, but never achieves full Glickian glory), but still very strong stuff. The dueling chicken dance sequence with Lindsay and Gob is obviously an instant classic. Next on Arrested Development: Fox officially cuts your season order from 22 to 18 episodes so they can air some dumbass cartoon starting May 1st. Assholes.]

[A bit of filler before a glorious, season-ending quartet? Undoubtedly. Mostly lethargic and littered with some of the clumsy plotting that has occasionally plagued this season, it also suffers a bit from TMK (Too Much Kirk) and TMT (Too Much Taylor); the former still nomadic, the latter yet again assembling the townsfolk (including a peculiarly helpful Luke, whose familial dreams are sure to be further explored in the season finale, titled "A House is Not a Home") to join his efforts to preserve and illuminate Stars Hollow's frequently-dubious historical relevance.
Seemingly promising comic scenarios like Lane, Rory, and Paris drunk on Patty's punch lead only to silliness: an inebriated Paris prancing barefoot around Stars Hollow begging for spare change and Lane confronting Sophie (Carole King, reprising her role; this character should obviously be played by Susanna Thompson) about an improbable affair with Zach, who, it turns out, was covertly strumming a banjo with a bluegrass trio in a back room. Would a hardcore music enthusiast really feel the need to hide this from Lane? It's the post-OBWAT? era! Pluck that banjo out in the open, rock boys and girls. You'll probably get signed to Lost Highway or Asthmatic Kitty.
Some comedic hits, though, e.g., the excellent Rory-Paris dorm room exchange, especially the quip about re-enacting the Maxell commercial, and the breakfast scene featuring Lorelai as substitute mother for Kirk ("No fort!").
Also: Jared Padelecki has mastered the act of angrily picking things up and angrily moving them. If you have a scene that requires someone to pick up a box (or canonball) and be really pissed off at it and then move it somewhere else and be equally pissed off at its destination, then JP is your guy. Could also apply to angry hammering and a variety of other construction tasks (see Dean's work during the Dragonfly build). Speaking of angry hammering, Dean's (farewell?) monologue [DEAN PLANTS SEED FOR POTENTIAL LUKE-LORELAI FISSURE; EXITS STAGE LEFT] was better suited for fare like One Tree Hill (my only experience with that show is the mindblowingly hideous WB promos -- a recent one hyped the upcoming "fresh" episode by promising to reveal just how far one character would "go" with "his wife's sister". "All the way", I hope!).

[Watch out, Rory! I'm pretty sure that Logan's cranky grandfather was in fact The Tall Man from the Phantasm films. The ball is back! Dude made Ben Gazzara in Buffalo '66 seem like a friendly dinner companion. "Rory, stop pointing that knife at me! No more tripe! You're not good enough for the Huntzberger entrees! Enough!" Also: Luke participates in Iron Chef: Stars Hollow and kicks ass (and speaks Spanish!) with the secret ingredient (duck) and may or may not have put walnuts in the bechamel. After some initial concerns about sauce straining, a bed-ridden -- and increasingly loopy -- Sookie gives Luke high scores, particularly for his intriguing lamb chop; hindered by some over-the-top drunken antics last week, Paris thankfully sobers up as Weil gets laughs from simple germaphobia (and she's pre-Med) and faith in her salve-crazed, Portuguese Nanny (Doyle could have used some of that magic goo on Buffy, preferably liberally applied to the season 7 teleplays); and a reluctant Rory will bring her pencil to the Stamford Eagle Gazette via an internship offer from Mitch Huntzberger (Gregg Henry, who got an audible laugh from me when he said that Paris's handshake reminded him of Jimmy Breslin's). The first step in Rory's ascent to Amanpourian journalistic heights or a disaster waiting to happen?]
