002. (6 January) The Office, 2.11 ***
[I was considering a **1/2, but that the stern-side, Jim/Michael "Never give up" scene pushed it to ***. (Though feuled by drink, I enjoyed the seeming sincerity of Michael's Jimmy V riff.) My main problem was that the Roy character is such an overt, frat-jock goon, that I don't buy the Pam-Roy thing at all (not to say that Pam types don't often get entangled with such fellas, but this is fictional Art, not a doc, and there's never been any scenes that explore their relationship beyond Pam being annoyed at his antics or the fact that Roy gave her an iPod and acted nice in front of her Mom). Lee always just seemed a bit bland and non-Tim-like. Lee doesn't truly cross the line until his does the unthinkable -- he ruins a Tim-Dawn ruse on Gareth in the Christmas Special. Is nothing sacred, Lee? And yes, Lee is a Brit, so it makes sense that American Lee would be more overtly unpleasant, but American Pam remains very true to the Dawn character, so the relationship is more out of whack in the US series. Three great moments: the awesome vending machine teaser (bag of nickels!), Pam's ironic cranial dance moves while Katy re-enacts her high school cheer, and Meredith wearing just the life vest.]
