Those cool human pyramids.

Like that Lethem story, here's another limited-time-only read. "The Shame Pony" (7/23/03) will disappear when Travis posts again (archive that stuff up, man!).

So, where do we stand?, first in a borrowed series. #001:

I'm borrowing an Esselle series for this post. I did not get authorization to do this, but I'm sure E would see it as homage, not heist. [UPDATE: "I see it as a heisted homage!" Touche!] Anyway, the Fork just gave the new SFA record an 8.9. But, as I've noted before, Brent D. cannot be trusted. Let me know where we stand on this band/record. Thanks.

My So-Called Taste.

This music correspondent will urinate all over the records you like.

Here's his take on my last ILTR, DYLTR? selection.

[Note: if you refresh the page a new "review" is generated, but one consistent description of this record is comparing one of the tracks to "Monica Seles serve grunts".]

Wino Forever.

Liz Smith "reports":

SHE'S BACK! And we do mean doe-eyed Winona Ryder. The word's already out that Winona has two class-A projects on the stove - Milos Forman's "Embers" with Sean Connery and Klaus Maria Brandauer (she's the woman who comes between two men in this period piece told in flashbacks), and then there's Robert Altman's "The Widow Claire," another period piece, World War II era, and another tale that sets her between two men. She's a wee thing, our Winona, but a femme fatale nonetheless.

On the personal side, Ryder is also riding high. She has been out and about with musician-composer Page Hamilton. They have been dating - quietly (the way Winona likes it) - for weeks. A friend says, "She couldn't be happier. It's all coming together. Her work, her love life."

----------

A couple of months ago it was Conor Oberst, and now it's the former frontman for Helmet? Crazy. Let me know who you think is next in my new comments thing.

Also, I found this pre-Page recap on the Radar Magazine site:

1994: Dave Pirner, Soul Asylum
1997: Evan Dando, the Lemonheads
1997: Jay Kay, Jamiroquai
1997: Stephan Jenkins, Third Eye Blind
1997: Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters
2000: Beck
2001: Ryan Adams
2001: Pete Yorn
2001: Jack White, the White Stripes
2002: Julian Casablancas, the Strokes
2003: Conor Oberst, Bright Eyes

Q. Who plays The Joker in this Batman "fan-film" that has some people all riled up?

A. Andrew Koenig, who played Richard "Boner" Stabone on the hit television series, "Growing Pains".

Brief chat with director here.

Fun Movie News. #007:

Cameron Diaz will star alongside Jim Carrey in Columbia's remake of the 1977 comedy FUN WITH DICK AND JANE for director Barry Sonnenfeld. Joel and Ethan Coen will work on a rewrite of the script. - AICN.

[Notes: Absent the Coens involvement, this would not really be "fun" movie news. Past Sonnenfeld-Coens collaborations have been quite fun (Sonnenfeld shot the first three Coen brothers films: Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, and Miller's Crossing). Also, the original draft of this script was done by Peter Tolan ("The Larry Sanders Show") and Judd Apatow ("Sanders", "Freaks & Geeks", and Carrey's 1996 minor-classic, The Cable Guy).]

"View From A Headlock".

New Jonathan Lethem story in this week's The New Yorker. This is an excerpt from Lethem's upcoming novel, The Fortress of Solitude.

[Note: the story will disappear from newyorker.com in one week.]

[UPDATE: 8/12/03 - the link still works! Please disregard my little poof warning. It seems that The New Yorker has switched - at least for some content - to permalinks. Neat.]
