Fun Movie News. #075:
I was darting around the IMDb and discovered a nice bit of casting by Steven Spielberg for The Terminal. Kumar! I also didn't know that Devito used him in Duplex.
At the time of this post, I just dropped an excerpt. The Kumar interview in The Believer is now online in full.

Botox for the brain box.
Fallout from Dan Neil's Pulizter:
"It is not criticism, even though it postures as criticism. Cars are utilitarian things. You might as well be a critic of kitchen utensils." - John Simon, theater critic of New York magazine.
"In principle, criticism is about cultural objects or phenomena, and I think cars qualify on both counts. There is a lot of great writing about architecture, and how different, really, are cars from buildings?" - Robert Christgau
QV sources reveal that several other critics and cultural watchdogs commented -- off the record -- that while they appreciated Dan's automobile scribblin', they were a bit troubled about awarding a Pulitzer Prize for criticism to someone who looked like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo.

Telly Alert. #021:
Dinner For Five (IFC, new episodes starting on Friday, April 9th, 10:00 p.m.)
The first new episode features Gina Gershon, Dennis Farina, Ron Livingston, and Faizon Love. Anyone who saw Faizon's first appearance (the great episode #7 w/ Sarah Silverman, Michael Rappaport, and Saffran Burrows, where he ultimately took over, unleashing anti-Spike Lee rants and dead-on, "Let's go work on the SOUNtrack!" impressions of Ice Cube on the set of Player's Club; Favs giggling nervously, Rapps amused yet flabbergasted) knows this is not to be missed. Word is that in this go-round Faizon has some funny tales about being on the set of Torque. More Cube riffs seem likely.

Episodes XVI-?
I lost track of this Eggers novel-in-progress thing and haven't read any since episode XV. Oh, well. I'm sure that McSweeney's will eventually publish some leather-bound, Oddi-printed complete volume and I can buy it for $35 and then add it to the stack. For those interested, said stack now includes a $1.75 Half'd hardcover edition of Heidi Julavits's The Effect of Living Backwards. Here's what frequent QV guest -- and blurber of choice -- George Saunders had to say about it:
"An absolute tour de force of apparently limitless imaginative ability, deep psychological insight, and astonishing verbal precision. In one fell swoop, Julavits establishes herself as the Scheherazade of the new Anti-Terror Age. Funny, unnerving, sophisticated, and dazzling in the range of its invention, The Effect of Living Backwards is a terrific and important addition to our literature." - GS.

Older, wiser and more talented.
I highly recommend watching the straight-to-DVD thriller Ripley's Game, even though it doesn't feature Kari Wuhrer (No! Idiot host).
Amusing write-up on the Netflix sleeve:
"Mr. Ripley's got game ... deadly game! With a mind as sharp as his throwing knives, it's child's play for Ripley to manipulate an innocent family man into becoming a cold-blooded assassin. But Ripley's intricately planned game of murder could spin out of control with the arrival of a gang of Russian mobsters intent on extracing their own pound of flesh. Stars Dougray Scott."
Stars Dougray Scott?! Malkovich couldn't get this thing in theaters and now he can't even get on the Netflix sleeve!
