National Anthem.
"Wave of Mutilation" plays like a warped incantation, as Frank Black's voice alternately soars and slithers, all building to that masterfully delivered chorus that seems to encompass both. It's a fantastical story of voyage and conquest, equal parts engaging and disturbing. But, more importantly, it already has a tie-in to one of the most popular audience activities at major sporting events-- the wave! During that final, breakdown-y bit of the chorus, the whole audience could make a "woooooo!" noise, and then begin tearing each other to bits and feasting on the sweet, sweet goo that oozes forth. God bless the U.S.A., indeed. - Matt LeMay, Pitchfork, 7/3/03.
