Telly Alert. #013:

Ultimate Film Fanatic (IFC, July 2004)

Will Harry enter? He'd definitely be a force in the "obsession war". I think the best I could come up with for that round would be a broken Admiral Akbar action figure (left arm fracture, plus substantial cranial trauma, the result of hurling the thing around my circa-1983 bedroom as part of the euphoria that usually resulted from playing Nerf hoops while listening to MJ's Off The Wall or Men At Work's Business As Usual), a postcard autographed by Bruce Campbell, and a Fargo snow globe.

This made me think of MTV's fantastic game show, Idiot Savants, which was basically an update of the deserves-its-own-post Remote Control (nice Wuhrer-based image collection here). The Savants "End Game" segments were quite fun. Since people picked their own categories, declaring themselves an "expert", the show's writers did not shy away from legit obscurities. When a true Savant got rolling, it was mesmerizing television. I remember two particularly awe-inspiring performances: some guy stunned the audience with the speed and precision of his answers re Taxi, and a girl (who I think may actually be the girl pictured in the above link!) made a mockery of the show's attempts to stump her about the Philadelphia Flyers.

Bonus tidbit: Savants co-star Shonda Farr was great in Buffy episode 5.15.
